Hello, In those cases it is strongly recommended to do a SYSTEM RESTORE because you probably have some malware or virus:
Open System Restore by clicking the Start button . In the search box, type System Restore, and then, in the list of results, click System Restore. If you're prompted for an administrator password XXXXX confirmation, type the password XXXXX provide confirmation, then follow the steps in the new open window.
For more information about SYSTEM RESTORE please go to: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/system-restore
greetings!

There is no malware or virus. System restore did not change anything. Right clicking on desktop permits Windows Office programs to be represented by icon, but in other cases the parth is correct, but start in begins in desktop then starts a completely different program. One cannot change icon.

It all started with a cleaning using Windows system tools - an superfluous fies and caches was safely removed. It the offerede removal of "miniatures", and thinking these were thumbmarks which mixed with real photos on my wifes pause screen I delede them - and the damage was done. I have a feeling that IconCache ought to contain the path of the programs on the desktop, but being a *.db file I cannot open and edit it.

Good afternoon,

You can make a duplicate of the desk. What you should do is create a new user as administrator. Logues with the new account. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the documents and setting. You will see that the different user profiles.
Make a copy of your old profile and then delete the old profile. Then log onto back with old profile. Copy the folder you have in the written copy of the profile you made.

For any clarification or questions, please contact me. If you believe that the answer provided is invalid, please mark the response as correct.

We look forward to hearing from you, receive a greeting

May be a corrupt shelliconcache file. Delete shelliconcache and let windows rebuild it.

Go to my computer>tools>folder options>view>check the circle beside"show hidden files and folders">apply>ok. Then go to local disk[c:]>windows>scroll down to the shelliconcache file>right click on it>delete. Restart the computer. Be sure to go back and uncheck the circle beside "show hidden files and folders">apply>ok.

Soto90 must be giving good advice as the same was suggested by a high ranking Oracle man - but the file does not not exist, either in my own Vista driven machine, nor in that of my wife - the sick one, Vista again. I wonder, however, that my own machine has a lean ShellNew, whereas that of my wife contains all the icons - mostly Microsoft - that could be back on the desktop, strangely not including Internet Explorer.

The creation of a new user has been tried, but I must have forgotten some step, for neither administrator, nor the new one, show on start-up.
Will try again, but that probably requires regedit - and Run is not on her startu-up screen.

Rubén Diaz has some advice, but is intelligible for me. Could you rephrase it, for I do not know where that R is to be found.

I get the feeling that since I can start many programs from the command line - very inconvenient for my wife - and leave them on the bottom line, with the few program she uses they might be put into startup so she does not lose her way every time there is an update or complte shut-down, but how do I do that?

Why should I mark an invalid reply as correct? Judging by your code I assume you to be Lebanese like our own good friend Imad, but sorry, the restore had no dates before the accident, so invalid yur response is, even a repetition. Well, thank for trying, technicians have also given up.
