Pregunta del cliente

Hi in August my mare had chronic colic which resulted in her having an operation to remove and repair a compact colon. At same time she had a lot of mucous coming out of her nose and eyes, the people that own the livery stables said it was possible a cold, the Vets could not find any sign of that and it just cleared up on its own. Do you have any ideas.
Many Thanks
Joanna
P.S. I have moved her to another stables.

Estimada Joanna!

Dear Joanna,
Wellcome to Justanswer, my name is Marta and I´ll try to help you.

In occidental medicine there might not be any relationship between the colic your mare had and the mucous coming out of her nose; but let me tell you that I work with acupuncture and in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) both problems are strongly related.

For TCM, Large Intestine and Lungs belong to the same level of meridians, and if one of them gets injured, the other usually is so.
The Lungs are the recipients of the mucous, and when you have an excess in that meridian, the mucous will come out by the natural holes related with the respiratory system, in this case are the nose and the eyes.

As soon as the colic problem solved the problem with the lung(the mucous) did too. It may appeared it took a little more time for the mucous, but I´m sure that the energy in the Large Intestine needed more time to be all right than it seemed.

I hope I helped you, and If you like to make me any other question I´ll be pleased to answer you.

Best Regards

Marta Calvo (IVAS Diplomated)

Dear Joanna!
Your question has appeared to me at first written in Spanish, I will translate my English response.

Hello my name is Peter and I will try to guide you in the event of his mare

There are several equine diseases that may present with nasal discharge
The more often you have commented effectively as equine influenza and equine influenza, but there are others such as the frontal sinuses sinusitis that may present with nasal discharge.
More serious illnesses such as bronchitis, pneumonia or pneumonia are usually accompanied by fever, cough, loss of appetite and general weakness.

For this reason I think that probably what has sustained his mare is a complicated flu conjunctivitis or sinusitis and sinus surgery because you have administered intravenous antibiotics improve the respiratory symptoms.

If backwards, shall administer specific treatment:
Antibiotics: penicillin or streptomycin
Antiestreptococócico serum intravenously
Antipyretics such as Finadyne
Mucolytics and expectorants to improve ventilation.

In the case that this treatment does not improve or saw head deformity can ask your horse to do one rx to see the structure of the breasts, and an exploration of the oral cavity, looking for any infection or alteration in their teeth
